FREE WATER-WASTE ESTIMATOR

Toilet Leak Cost Calculator

Estimate how much water a leaking toilet may waste and what that waste could add to your water and sewer bill.

EPA small-leak example0.02 GPM≈ 860 gal/month

1. Choose the closest leak size

EPA WaterSense publishes example toilet leak rates for small, medium, and large leaks. Use Custom if you know your actual flow rate.

2. How long does it leak?

3. Add your water + sewer rate

For a better estimate, use the variable water and sewer rate from your own utility bill.

Products That May Help

Confirm the leak source first. Flappers, seals, fill valves, and repair kits are not compatible with every toilet.

How to Use the Result

The number above is an estimate, not a direct flow measurement. The best use of the calculator is to see how quickly a leak can add up and whether it is worth investigating now rather than waiting for the next water bill.

  • Small or intermittent leak: run the dye test and inspect the flapper or flush-valve seal.
  • Constant trickle: check whether the seal closes fully, the chain is interfering, or the fill valve keeps adding water.
  • Fast-running toilet: treat it as urgent. If the valve will not shut off and you can safely operate the toilet shutoff valve, close the water supply and arrange repair.

If water is appearing on the floor, this calculator cannot tell you whether the source is a supply connection, condensation, tank hardware, or the floor seal. Dry the area and identify where fresh water first appears before replacing a wax ring.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much water can a leaking toilet waste?

EPA WaterSense examples range from about 860 gallons per month for a small 0.02 GPM leak to roughly 4,300 gallons per day for a large 3.0 GPM leak. Your actual leak may be lower, higher, or intermittent.

How can I tell if my toilet is leaking silently?

EPA recommends adding a few drops of food coloring or a dye tablet to the tank and waiting about 10 minutes without flushing. If color appears in the bowl, water is leaking from the tank into the bowl. Flush afterward.

Does a running toilet always mean the flapper is bad?

No. A worn flapper or flush-valve seal is common, but water can also run because of chain interference, incorrect water level, a fill valve that will not shut off, or water entering the overflow tube.

Why is the calculator asking for a water and sewer rate?

Utilities bill differently. Entering your own variable water and sewer rate makes the cost estimate more relevant than using a generic national figure.

Should I buy a universal flapper?

Not automatically. Flapper size, flush-valve design, and manufacturer-specific seals vary. Identify the toilet model and check compatibility before ordering a replacement.
